     An abstract method is a contract which forces its immediate subclass to implement the behaviour of all abstract methods. Where as overriding is optional and is not always a necessity for the subclasses.

     Efficiency of abstract method lies in the fact that they force the immediate subclass to provide implementation. Generally speaking go for abstract over overide in cases where you do not know what would be the common default implementation for all child classes.

     For your example what if we donot know what is the common noise/sound that most of the animals make. We only know that all animals make noise. So better to go for abstract. If you knew the common/default noise that most of the animals make then you could provide that implementation in Animal class as non abstract and if needed its child classes can override it if they think they make a better noise :-)

     Generally I treat any module that has mutable global state like this to be a mistake. Instead, I'd opt for creating an object with these methods and having a way to pass in overrides.

     What you need here is Polymorphism. First create an interface -

     public interface MyInterface{ void methodA();}-

     then create two different implementations for two different behaviors -

     public class First implements MyInterface{ public void methodA() { // first behavior }}public class Second implements MyInterface{ public void methodA() { // second behavior }}

     Now create your other classes as follows -

     class B{ public void methodB(MyInterface m) { m.methodA(); }}class C{ B b = new B(); public void methodC() { // Pass the corresponding behavior implementation // as argument here. b.methodB(new First()); }}class D{ B b = new B(); public void methodD() { // Pass the second behavior implementation. b.methodB(new Second()); }}

     This will result in a more maintainable code.

     Yes, you are. You can't change the return type of a method by overriding it. I don't understand it in your sample anyway. Just leave the return type as it was and return a new ExternalObjectStub. This works, because ExternalObjectStub derives from ExternalObject.

     Changing the return type by hiding the base member with new as you do it, is generally a very bad idea, because it leads to a class that can't be used in a polymorphic way. This is exactly what you are experiencing here: If the type of the variable that holds the reference is of type ParentClass it calls the method in ParentClass, even if the instance really is of type ChildClass, because ChildClass doesn't provide an overriden implementation of GetExternalObject.
