In this article, you’ll learn how to play some essential strumming patterns for beginners that sound great on an electric or acoustic guitar.
- Listen to the song and find the pulse. During this first stage, a lot should happen. Engage yourself into deep listening so you can discover both the song’s structure and its creative potential, as well as how it might be played.
- Identify the main beat. The main beat is usually the strongest, most prominent beat in the song. The beat is the steady pulse that you feel when you listen to a piece of music.
- Determine the number of beats in a measure. Once you’ve identified the main beat, count out how many beats there are in each measure. A measure is a unit of time, typically consisting of 4 beats.
- 4 or 3/4 or 2/2. The top number tells us how many beats there are in a measure, and the bottom number tells us what kind of note gets one beat. In 4/4 time, the quarter note gets one beat.
