A chemical change is a chemical reaction involving the rearrangement of atoms and the formation of new substances with chemical properties different from the starting substances. An example of a chemical change is the rusting of iron, in which iron and oxygen combine to form iron oxide.
In a chemical reaction, there is a change in the composition of the substances in question; in a physical change there is a difference in the appearance, smell, or simple display of a sample of matter without a change in composition.
A chemical change changes the chemical identity of the substance - if you were to identify it, it would be a different compound or a mixture of new elements. A physical change still keeps the original chemical identity, albeit in a different form.
