Barela-Shepherd received her undergraduate degree from Texas Tech University and her J.D.from the University of New Mexico.
Prior to her appointment to the Second Judicial District, Barela-Shepherd was a Bernalillo County Metropolitan Courtjudge from 1997 to 2003. She also previously worked as general counsel for the New Mexico Department of Health and as an attorney in private practice.
