Nov 27, 2018 · As reported by Variety, Hillenburg passed away on Monday at the age of 57. Hillenburg's life was cut short due to ALS, short for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Hillenburg made it public in March 2017 that he had been diagnosed with the disease, which ultimately took his life yesterday.
