Sep 17, 2017 · Five miles from the trail’s start, the AT reaches a signed junction. To the left, a blue-blazed path leads downhill to a natural spring and an interesting geological feature called the Devil’s Racecourse. Steps beyond, a second spur heads off to the right, leading 1/10 mile to the Raven Rock Shelter.
Get to know this 10.8-mile out-and-back trail near Smithsburg, Maryland. Generally considered a challenging route, it takes an average of 5 h 18 min to complete. This is a popular trail for birding, hiking, and walking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime.

The closest camping area is the Devils Racecourse Shelter area approx 2 miles south of High Rock on the Appalachian Trail, but it is well worth the extra walk to see the Devils Racecourse. The Devils Racecourse is large boulder field in the middle of the woods and incredible to explore.

Starting at fabled “Devil’s Racecourse” glacial scree deposit feature off Ritchie Road west of MD 491. Spur leads you to AT above Raven Rock. You miss the nice invigorating early Raven Rock trail elevation gain, so it’s an easier ascent & descent. About 1.2 miles shorter.

This 5.1-mile section hosts one of the oddest named shelters (Devils Racecourse), crosses the Mason-Dixon Line, and climbs to the highest point on the AT in Maryland.
