History. Dickson City was once known as Priceburg. It was the newest village in the valley and one of the most progressive. German immigrants then founded the village of Priceville in 1863, in honor of Eli Price. This section of the town developed rapidly after 1880, when John Jermyn sank the shaft which is now known as the Johnson shaft.

Sep 17, 2021 · Dickson City’s formation and early history owes a lot to the boom of anthracite coal mining in the state of Pennsylvania. Its name comes from Thomas Dickson. He founded Dickson Manufacturing Company, which specialized in making iron rails for coal-powered trains in the Northeast Pennsylvania region.
Dickson City Borough was organized in 1875. It was named after Thomas Dickson, founder of the Dickson Manufacturing Company and president of the D & H Railroad from 1869 to 1884. Originally the borough, which was carved out of Blakely, was called Dickson.
