  5. Mar 19, 2020 · I had trouble finding a hook for a critique of the excellent Coen Brother’s film, Miller’s Crossing. I read several reviews, even going so far as to read Roger Ebert’s pedestrian analysis. As to be expected, Ebert, who seemingly offers reviews from beyond the grave like a Dracula with press credentials, the piece was about him.

  7. Oct 16, 2020 · Even Roger Ebert (who gave it 3 stars) said, " This doesn't look like a gangster movie, it looks like a commercial intended to look like a gangster movie. Everything is too designed. That goes for the plot and the dialogue, too. The dialogue is well-written, but it is indeed written. We admire the prose rather than the message.

  8. The hilarious comedy Raising Arizona played in more theaters and made more money but it didn’t really break through until it was on video. Those familiar with the Coens didn’t know quite what to make of Miller’s Crossing. Those who didn’t know a “Coen” from a “Cohen” promptly dismissed the film. It was a box office failure.
