Assessment There are no written examinations in this course. All work is continuously assessed. The course is evaluated through a combination of essays, a journal, a legal project, oral presentation, poster presentation, agency profile and a group research project. In order to encourage critical thinking, you will be required to complete a reflective statement of learning at the end of each module.

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by 1 January of the year of application, and will have shown an interest in or be employed in the area of disability. While there are no formal educational requirements, it is expected that proposed candidates will have attained Leaving Certificate/FETAC Level 5 or an equivalent qualification. Prior experience will be taken into account and short-listed candidates may be required to attend for an interview. Diploma programmes are offered subject to a minimum number of eligible applicants registering for the programme. Following completion of year 1 of this programme, should a sufficient number of eligible students not wish to progress form year 1 to year 2 of this programme as to make the year 2 viable, students will graduate with a certificate at that point. Programme viability is determined by reference to fee income and applicable costs in running the programme.
Delivery Mode For Academic Year 2021/22 Following consultation with our students and programme teams, there will be a blended online approachfor this programme for the 2021/22 academic year. This approach will allow for the multiple other personal and professional commitments that adult learners often have to manage alongside their studies. From September to December, all courses will be delivered online where students will attend live virtual classes which will incorporate (as much as possible) opportunities for engagement and interactivity with lecturers and fellow students. From January to June, we will endeavour to provide opportunities for in-class workshops and lectures where relevant. Please note that if some campus-based activity does resume, it will not be compulsory for students to attend face-to-face classes. The HDFIDS is unique: there are no similar programmes currently on offer in Ireland. It is a natural progression route for graduates of the Diploma in Disability Studies (and other courses) as well as an opportunity for anyone working in the area of disability to improve their knowledge and skills. The course also gives a progression route to a Masters in Social Science (Disability Studies). One of our students has recently secured a post as a community employment supervisor, training 31 people on CE schemes. She observed that most of the interview focused on inclusion and feels that embarking on the HDFIDS and the DDS contributed to her getting this position. She also feels the course helps her not only in her role as supervisor and trainer but also in her work with the older people many of whom have a disability.
Applications will be considered from those who: 1. Hold a primary degree in any discipline (but preferably in the areas of Humanities, Social Sciences, Health Care) and evidence of working in the area of disability, whether in a personal, professional, voluntary or community capacity) 2. Or the candidate can hold a Diploma in Disability Studies/Autism Studies and have, in the opinion of the selection panel, evidence of substantial experience (at least two years) of working in the area of disability, whether in a personal, professional, voluntary or community capacity. 3. Candidates may be required to attend for interview. Shortlisting may apply.
