My Garmin is waterproof, it floats, far more shock resistant, and runs on 2 AA batteries. Try dropping a phone off a cliff, toss it in a river or recharge it when you are two miles into a four mile hike.

Phone GPSes are not quite as good as what you find on a Garmin, though, so phones use cell towers to improve location accuracy. When phones lose cell reception, their GPS capability can drop.

  3. Same with the 520+. It'll work without a phone, however the phone makes it more convenient. No reason that most of the Garmins shouldn't work perfectly fine on their own though. Wahoo ELEMNT doesn't require a smart phone, but it does enhance the experience some.
