Jun 19, 2018 · Josiah “Doc” Scurlock was a major player in the Lincoln County War. And he was in the region even before, going to work for cattleman John Chisum in the early 1870s. When John Tunstall was murdered, Scurlock became one of the founders of the Regulators, and after Dick Brewer was killed at the Blazer’s Mill shootout, Doc became leader.
Josiah Gordon “Doc” Scurlock then took the lead. The violence of the Lincoln County War continued to rage until finally, in September 1878, President Rutherford B. Hayes removed New Mexico’s corrupt Governor Axtell from office and appointed Lew Wallace as New Mexico’s new governor.
