Its final scene promised more adventures for the Doctor, teasing the sequel Doctor Detroit 2: The Wrath of Mom (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan had been released less than a year prior).
Trivia. During the end credits, we see a bold promise that Doctor Detroit would return in "Doctor Detroit II: The Wrath of Mom" (spoofing the title of Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan).
The promise of a sequel, jokingly titled Doctor Detroit II: The Wrath of Mom towards the end of the film, was all but abandoned once it failed. Regardless, the film has had plenty of shelf life over the years, almost despite itself. I personally find it lighthearted and enjoyable.
