While studio had high hopes to be a box office smash, Doctor Detroit barely squeaked by financially. Meaning the sequel promised in the end credits Doctor Detroit 2: The Wrath of Mom, never took place. Despite the financial flopping, this raucous 80’s comedy has developed a bit of a cult following.

In a bid to avoid paying the $80,000 he owes to butch crime boss "Mom" (Kate Murtaugh), Hesseman creates a fictional super-criminal named "Doctor Detroit" he claims muscled him out of the money.
The promise of a sequel, jokingly titled Doctor Detroit II: The Wrath of Mom towards the end of the film, was all but abandoned once it failed. Regardless, the film has had plenty of shelf life over the years, almost despite itself.
