     It's true that Jakarta EE 9 is essentially exactly the same as Jakarta EE 8, but then with the javax.* package/prefix throughout the source code renamed to jakarta.*. The minimum required Java SE version therefore also remains 1.8. Imporantingly because the TCK tests still require a minimum of Java SE 1.8.

     However, specifically for GlassFish 6.0.0 the story is a bit different behind the scenes. Whilst it also still minimally requires Java SE 1.8, it is all by itself in turn not compatible with Java SE 11 or newer. I.e. you can't even execute GlassFish core engine using Java SE 11. It would immediately die with the following error message:

     JVM failed to start: com.sun.enterprise.admin.launcher.GFLauncherException: The server exited prematurely with exit code 1.

     This specific problem is really different from the Java SE compatibility of the Jakarta EE API itself, also from other Jakarta EE servers, which can themselves just be compatible with a newer Java SE version.

     For example, WildFly 22+, is perfectly compatible with Java SE 11 (even all the way up to the currently available 15), so you can safely run Jakarta EE 9 applications on WildFly with a Java SE version up to 15.

     There were plans to make GlassFish 6.0.0 Java SE 11 compatible right before the release of Jakarta EE 9 but unfortunately that did't made it due to lack of time of open source code committers. Currently there's a GlassFish 6.1.0 work in progress which should make it finally compatible with Java SE 11 (and hopefully also newer).

     The full error message is :

     • Type java.lang.String is indirectly referenced from required .class files but cannot be resolved since the declaring package java.lang exportedfrom module java.base conflicts with a package accessible from module

     It's caused by one of the transitive dependencies, net.openhft:affinity:3.2.3, embedding 2 classes from the java.lang package, which is illegal. The ECJ compiler in Eclipse complaining about it is expected. However, the fact it works in javac is a bug in itself: https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-8215739

     If you're not using the thread affinity features, just exclude affinity from your dependencies and the Eclipse compiler will stop complaining.

     We managed to find the cause of the problem. In ide intellij I have a modules maven project and I use JLupin Platform Development Tool, so in *.iml files i dont have line:

     '<'module org.jetbrains.idea.maven.project.MavenProjectsManager.isMavenModule = "true" type = "JAVA_MODULE" version = "4"> but i have for example:

     '<'module org.jetbrains.idea.maven.project.MavenProjectsManager.isMavenModule = "true" type = "JLP_NATIVE_MICROSERVICE_IMPLEMENTATION_MODULE_TYPE" version = "4">

     During the development, the names of the modules were changed, then the idea asked whether to remove modules (because ide did not recognize:

     type = "JLP_NATIVE_MICROSERVICE_IMPLEMENTATION_MODULE_TYPE"). Although the chosen option was not, then ide automatically performed:

     • selecting the maven module as ignored
     • replace in the iml file from:'<'module org.jetbrains.idea.maven.project.MavenProjectsManager.isMavenModule = "true" type = "JLP_NATIVE_MICROSERVICE_IMPLEMENTATION_MODULE_TYPE" version = "4">to:'<'module type = "JLP_NATIVE_MICROSERVICE_IMPLEMENTATION_MODULE_TYPE" version = "4">

     For the above reason, the project did not correctly read the maven artifacts. After unifying the names and marking the project as not ignored, it works correctly. The problem is not related to java packages

     It seems the xpp3.jar

     file is broken:

     The JAR file contains the provider-configuration file META-INF/services/org.xmlpull.v1.XmlPullParserFactory with the following content:

     org.xmlpull.mxp1.MXParser,org.xmlpull.mxp1_serializer.MXSerializer-

     The two provider classes are specified as comma-separated list instead of one class per line. See Javadoc of ServiceLoader (highlighting in bold by me):

     The file contains a list of fully-qualified binary names of concrete provider classes, one per line.

     See also the error message: it says Provider class and not Provider classes and there is no space after the , so it names only the single class with the invalid name org.xmlpull.mxp1.MXParser,org.xmlpull.mxp1_serializer.MXSerializer.

     The misleading error message talking about a module descriptor implies that the implementation of services specified via META-INF/services/*

     files (available since Java 6), has been merged with the new implementation of JPMS services specified via the module-info.java

     file (which are available since Java 9). This might result that in Java 9 and higher errors occur that did not occur in Java 8 and lower or that an error occurs at an earlier point in time (already when starting the application instead of when using it).

     The Spring Boot 2.x generation requires at least Java 8. This is documented in the system requirements section of the reference documentation. As new versions of Java have been released, support for them has be added. Spring Boot 2.7.10, the latest Spring Boot 2.7.x release at the time of writing, supports Java 8 to 20 inclusive.

     The Spring Boot 3.x generation requires at least Java 17. This too is documented with Java 17 to 20 inclusive being the currently supported versions.
