Doom metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music that typically uses slower tempos, low-tuned guitars and a much "thicker" or "heavier" sound than other heavy metal genres. Both the music and the lyrics are intended to evoke a sense of despair, dread, and impending doom.

    • Saint Vitus – Saint Vitus (1984) As the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal gained traction, it inspired an international subsect of bands blending the bombast and pageantry of this fresh sound with the sluggish pace of Sabbath.
    • Candlemass – Epicus Doomicus Metallicus (1986) Similar to Metallica and Napalm Death, Candlemass didn’t invent doom metal with their debut album, but they definitely built a measuring stick against which every future genre band would get compared.
    • Paradise Lost – Icon (1993) Most bands go down in history for pioneering one genre. Paradise Lost pioneered two. In the early ’90s, the Northern nihilists co-wrote the parameters for death/doom with the rest of the “Peaceville three” (My Dying Bride and Anathema) by making death metal slow and sad.
    • Electric Wizard – Dopethrone (2000) “Stoner doom” blew up in the 1990s thanks to Sleep and Kyuss, and Electric Wizard were a distinctly British answer to that largely American scene.

    • Trouble – Psalm 9. Righteous thundering chunks of fiery Biblical brimstone distinguished by sinister guitar harmonies and Eric Wagner’s impassioned Judgement Day holler, Trouble’s debut had a more aggressive attack than their contemporaries (especially vengeful rampage Bastards Will Pay).
    • Pentagram – Relentless. When Bobby Leibling’s occult hellraisers released this full-length debut, 14 years into their slow-release career, their magisterial Virginian take on Sabbath’s downer fundamentals already sounded spookily out-of-time.
    • Candlemass – Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. With that audacious, literally genre-defining title, Candlemass honed and nailed an entire sound, style and atmosphere.
    • Saint Vitus – Born Too Late. The shambling LA foursome had distinguished themselves as one-of-a-kind slow n’ low pioneers with vocalist Scott Reagers since 1981, but when the sainted Wino took over they focused all their wayward strengths onto their defining statement: a bleak, strung-out monument to alienation, war, madness and drug addiction.
