Stella would come to spend the most of her childhood in Memphis, Tennessee, where her parents had relocated to when she was 4 years old. She graduated from Memphis Tech High School in 1955 after which she proceeded to Memphis State College to study medicine, hoping to follow in her mother’s footsteps. It was in college that Stevens fell in love with acting and sought to pursue it full time. She began acting professionally in the late 50s.
