The chilly landscapes of Helsinki are warmed by the gentle humanism and wry humor of Aki Kaurismäki in the first installment of his FINLAND TRILOGY, a deadpan tale of everyday survival in the face of overwhelming obstacles.
Drifting Clouds is about some familiar Kaurismäki subjects: work, unemployment, and a small, self-run business. The main characters are a married couple, Ilona and Lauri, played by two of Kaurismäki’s doe-eyed, heavy-set, resolutely unglamorous regulars, Kati Outinen and Kari Väänänen.
An early gem from Finnish maestro Aki Kaurismäki, Drifting Clouds is a deceptively simple story. The aftermath of job losses for wife Ilona (Kati Outinen) and husband Lauri (Kari Väänänen) holds a series of misfortunes, all of them tests to their marital bond.
