Gian Maria Visconti. Gian Maria Visconti (or Giovanni Maria; 7 September 1388 – 16 May 1412) was the second Visconti Duke of Milan, the son of Gian Galeazzo Visconti and Caterina Visconti. He was known to be cruel and was eventually assassinated. He had no children.
One of the decks, known as The Visconti Tarot, was probably made for Filippo Maria Visconti, the last duke of Milan of that name, prior to his death in 1447. The other deck, known as The Visconti-Sforza Tarot , was more than likely made for Francesco Sforza, a mercenary commander who married the only child of Filippo Maria Visconti.
After his death the Visconti territories passed to Giovanni Maria Visconti, whose rule was so violent and corrupt that he was assassinated in 1412.
