Dumaguete, officially the City of Dumaguete ( Tagalog: [ dʊmɐˈgɛtɛ]; Cebuano: Dakbayan sa Dumaguete; Filipino: Lungsod ng Dumaguete ), is a 2nd class component city and capital of the province of Negros Oriental, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 134,103 people.
Negros Oriental faces Cebu to the east across the Tañon Strait and Siquijor to the southeast. The primary spoken language is Cebuano and the predominant religious denomination is Roman Catholicism. Dumaguete is the capital, seat of government, and most populous city of the province.
Dumaguete History - The City of Gentle People "Dumaguete" was coined from the Visayan word "daggit" which means "to snatch". Because of the frequent marauding attacks of the pirates on this once coastal town, and the power to attract and keep her visitors for good, the word "dumaguet" was coined, meaning "to swoop".
