Dumbarton Castle (Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Breatainn, pronounced [t̪unˈpɾʲɛʰt̪ɪɲ]; Welsh: Alt Clut) has the longest recorded history of any stronghold in Scotland. It sits on a volcanic plug of basalt known as Dumbarton Rock which is 240 feet (73 m) high and overlooks the Scottish town of Dumbarton .

Dumbarton Castle was the centre of the ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde, supposedly visited by Merlin. It was later sacked by Vikings. Dumbarton Castle is a historic fortress, built on the basalt plug from an extinct volcano. The 2 tops of the plug are both about 250 feet above sea level, and accessible by stairways. They're well worth the effort though, for the panoramic views of the West of Scotland that they offer.
