The county was created in 1891 and later organized in 1892. It is north of the Texas state line. Eddy County comprises the Carlsbad-Artesia, NM Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Eddy, county, southeastern New Mexico, U.S., bordered on the south by Texas. Its western region is in the Sacramento section of the Basin and Range Province, a rugged area where the Guadalupe Mountains rise to more than 6,000 feet (1,800 metres).
