     Because you call the function print while the dictionary is created. You're storing the result of the calls in the dictionary , not the function print. As a result, your dictionary is going to be populated by None values representing the return value of the print calls.

     What you should do is have a structure like:

     d = {'abc': print} -

     And now your dictionary will store the actual function {'abc', <function print>}

     You can then call these functions by iterating through the values of the dictionary:

     for str, func in d.items(): func(str)# prints abc

     Additionally, you need to avoid using names like dict for your variables. They mask the built-in types for python (in your case the dict

     built-in type).

     Generally opt for other names, like d.

     You can use the data structure "tuple" as a key in the dictionary. If you want to define a function that returns a n-tuple given n inputs, you can do that also.

     a = 4b = 5-dict_example = dict()dict_example[(a,b)] = 1print dict_example[(a,b)]

     This prints the value of key (a,b), which is 1

     Try this:

     def forget_torpedoes(mylist): return reduce(lambda acc, x: {x : acc}, reversed(mylist))-

     This will work for a flat list as follows:

     In [9]: forget_torpedoes( [5, 6, 7, 8] )Out[9]: {5: {6: {7: 8}}}

     I realize that doesn't answer (all) of your question, since you have nested lists. But then again, it should get you most of the way :)

     If it is only to add a new tuple and you are sure that there are no collisions in the inner dictionary, you can do this:

     def addNameToDictionary(d, tup): if tup[0] not in d: d[tup[0]] = {} d[tup[0]][tup[1]] = [tup[2]]
