Although Lincoln received less than 40% of the popular vote, he easily won the Electoral College vote over Stephen Douglas (Democrat), John Breckenridge (Southern Democrat), and John Bell (Constitutional Union).
With four candidates in the field, Lincoln received only 40% of the popular vote and 180 electoral votes — enough to narrowly win the crowded election. This meant that 60% of the voters selected someone other than Lincoln.

The election of 1860 proved to be the breaking point for an already unstable nation. By Lincoln’s inauguration in March, 1861 seven states from the Deep South had already left the Union. Lincoln closed his first inaugural address with the plea that his nation not be torn apart by war.
