Apr 7, 2024 · Elizabeth Rockefeller Strong. Elizabeth "Bessie" Rockefeller (August 23, 1866 – November 14, 1906) was the eldest child of Standard Oil co-founder John Davison Rockefeller (1839–1937) and school teacher Laura Celestia "Cettie" Spelman (1839–1915).
She was the daughter of Elizabeth "Bessie" Rockefeller (1866–1906) and Dr. Charles Augustus Strong (1862–1940). Her maternal grandfather was Standard Oil co-founder John D. Rockefeller (1839–1937).
Villa Le Balze was planned in 1911 by English architects Cecil Pinsent and Geoffrey Scott for the American philosopher Charles Augustus Strong and his wife Elizabeth Rockefeller Strong, daughter of John D. Rockefeller. It was built in a tight space among the Tuscan hills overlooking the city of Florence.

Nov 18, 2016 · In 1979, Margaret Rockefeller Strong, daughter of Dr. Charles Augustus Strong and Elizabeth Rockefeller, and granddaughter of John D. Rockefeller, donated her father’s estate, Villa Le Balze, to Georgetown University. Her dream was that Villa Le Balze would forever be a place of learning in honor of her father—a philosopher, writer, and educator.
