TITLE. Elizabeth the Queen. Full-Length Play, Drama / 7w, 16m. Maxwell Anderson. In this drama we see Elizabeth and Essex, a royal favorite and popular general, in love. He is barely thirty and Elizabeth is an aging woman; their love is an extraordinary paradox.
The play centres on weekly meetings, called audiences, between Queen Elizabeth II (originally played by Helen Mirren) and her prime ministers. It premiered in the West End in 2013, at the Gielgud Theatre. A Broadway production opened in 2015, also starring Mirren.
