Endolimax is a genus of amoebozoa that are found in the intestines of various animals, including the species E. nana found in humans. Originally thought to be non-pathogenic, studies suggest it can cause intermittent or chronic diarrhea.
Endolimax nana (Fig. 4-1) is the smallest of the intestine-dwelling amoebae infecting humans, its trophozoite averaging only 8 μm in diameter (range, 6-15 μm). The trophozoite lives in the host’s colon and is generally considered to be nonpathogenic.

In this review, we seek to provide an overview of the work that has been performed on the parasite since the genus Endolimax was described by Kuenen and Swellengrebel in 1917 and suggest activities that may pave the way for a better understanding of E. nana in a clinical and public health context.
Entamoeba coli, E. hartmanni, E. polecki, Endolimax nana, and Iodamoeba buetschlii are generally considered nonpathogenic and reside in the large intestine of the human host. Introduction. Endolimax nana is a small non-pathogenic amoeba with world wide distribution. Its life cycle is similar to that of E. histolytica but is non invasive. Morphology of cysts . Cysts of E. nana are 6 - 9 in diameter. They can be spherical or ovoid in shape and contain 4 pin-point nuclei which are highlighted by the addition of iodine.
