Pathophysiology of Amebiasis. Entamoeba species exist in 2 forms: Trophozoite. Cyst. The motile trophozoites feed on bacteria and tissue, reproduce, colonize the lumen and the mucosa of the large intestine, and sometimes invade tissues and organs.
Endolimax nana (Fig. 4-1) is the smallest of the intestine-dwelling amoebae infecting humans, its trophozoite averaging only 8 μm in diameter (range, 6-15 μm). The trophozoite lives in the host’s colon and is generally considered to be nonpathogenic.
Laboratory diagnosis is made by finding the characteristic cysts in an iodine stained, formol-ether concentration method or by detecting the characteristic trophozoites in a wet preparation or a permanent stained preparation.
Aug 24, 2016 · In some organisms, the nuclear chromatin arrangement tends to mimic that of Endolimax nana, Entamoeba hartmanni, or even Chilomastix mesnili, particularly if the organisms are overstained. The cytoplasm is usually vacuolated and may contain ingested debris as well as some large, uniform granules.
