Entamoeba coli, E. hartmanni, E. polecki, Endolimax nana, and Iodamoeba buetschlii are generally considered nonpathogenic and reside in the lumen of the large intestine in the human host. Both cysts and trophozoites of these species are passed in stool and are considered diagnostic . Cysts are typically found in formed stool, whereas trophozoites are typically found in diarrheal stool.
Current U.S. treatment guidelines recommend as first line treatment either metronidazole 500-750 mg PO three times daily for 7-10 days in adults and 35-50 mg/kg/d PO in three divided doses for 7-10 days in children OR tinidazole 2g PO once daily for 3 days in adults and 50 mg/kg/d PO in a single dose for 3 days in children.

Several protozoan species in the genus Entamoeba colonize humans, but not all of them are associated with disease. Entamoeba histolytica is well recognized as a pathogenic ameba, associated with intestinal and extraintestinal infections. Other morphologically-identical Entamoeba spp., including E. dispar, E. moshkovskii, and E. bangladeshi, are gen...
Cysts and trophozoites are passed in feces . Cysts are typically found in formed stool, whereas trophozoites are typically found in diarrheal stool. Infection with Entamoeba histolytica (and E.dispar) occurs via ingestion of mature cysts from fecally contaminated food, water, or hands. Exposure to infectious cysts and trophozoites in fecal matter d...
Pathogenic Entamoeba species occur worldwide and are frequently recovered from fresh water contaminated with human feces. The majority of amebiasis cases occur in developing countries. In industrialized countries, risk groups include men who have sex with men, travelers, recent immigrants, immunocompromised persons, and institutionalized population...

Typically, these protozoa inhabit the large intestinal tract and can be identified in diagnostic stool specimens.
In patients with persistent diarrhea whose diagnostic fecal evaluation reveals only the presence of Entamoeba coli, administering a course of specific anti-amebic therapy is reasonable. 1 All of the Swedish patients were reported to respond to a 10-day course of diloxanide furoate in a dose of 500 mg three times daily. 7 Children also may respond …
