In 1942, as a young medical intern, Park was bound by his parents to marry a girl. But Jung Nam's arranged marriage ended when his fiancée, whom he had never met, committed suicide.

Epitaph is noted for its classic portrayal of Kyongseong (now Seoul) life in the 1940s, when Japanese cultural influences remained strong. A few techniques used by the directors to recreate the 1937 setting were: 1.) utilizing 16mm film, 2.) utilizing vintage camera from that era, and 3.) placing scratches and dust on the film surface.
