   • Purchased a group of chisels on Craig's List. These are 50's era Swedish chisels made by Erik Anton Berg in Eskilstuna, Sweden. A northern carpenter of Swedish descent had used them during his career and the chisels accompanied him when he moved south.

   • Eskilstuna Steel manufactured a number of brands of chisels, including Eskilstuna Steel Garanti, Esteel, and Gensco. I don’t know at this time if Eskilstuna Steel had anything to do with the Torshälla Smide brand. This brand was sort of an unusual find. It came from a set of six chisels that came from an estate.

   What are eskilstunasteel chisels made of?

   • Most of the Eskilstunasteel chisels that I’ve seen with wooden handles are made of masur (curly) birch. The hoop at the top of the handle is pierced and has a replacement nail crudely pounded into it. The decal is rectangular and very plain. It says “ESKILSTUNASTEEL” at the top, “GARANTI” in the middle, and ESKILSTUNA-SWEDEN” at the bottom.

   Yes. Gensco chisels were made by Eskilstuna Steel in Torshälla, Sweden … just north of the city of Eskilstuna. The “Eskilstuna Steel” imprint often shows up on Gensco chisel blades. I believe that the General Steel company was the U.S. distributor for Gensco chisels.
