She married the Reverend James Hewlett in 1809, and they had five children, the fourth of whom I am descended from. He died 10 years after they got married, in 1820, leaving her with five children under 10. During their marriage, she had written a few books, with little commercial success.
In 1966, after a decade of exploring alternative vehicles for philanthropy, Bill Hewlett, at the age of 53, formed the foundation. Esther Hewlett was very creative in crochet design, and while she was on Palomar Mountain started selling crochet designs to magazines.
