The 1960 European Nations' Cup was the inaugural tournament of the UEFA European Championship, held every four years and organised by UEFA. The first tournament was held in France. It was won by the Soviet Union, who beat Yugoslavia 2–1 in Paris after extra time.

The sixteen European Championship tournaments have been won by ten national teams: Germany and Spain have each won three titles, Italy and France have won two titles, and the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, the Netherlands, Denmark, Greece and Portugal have won one title each.
The UEFA European Championship was introduced in 1960. Germany and Spain are the most successful teams in the UEFA Euro. Germany won the title in 1972, 1980 and 1996 in six final appearances while Spain won in 1964, 2008 and 2012 after competing in four finals.
