Euro is the currency of the countries in the eurozone. One euro is divided into 100 cent (officially) [1] (singular) or "cents" (unofficially). [2] Because of the number of different languages in the European Union, there are different, unofficial, names for this unit (the French call them "centimes" and the Spanish "céntimos", for example).
After tough negotiations, the Maastricht Treaty entered into force in 1993 with the goal of creating an economic and monetary union (EMU) by 1999 for all EU states except the UK and Denmark (even though Denmark has a fixed exchange rate policy with the euro). The currency was formed virtually in 1999; notes and coins began to circulate in 2002.
