Feb 7, 2023 · Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) is a spreading plant with upright stems that produce whorls of pale purple flowers in mid to late summer. The small oval leaves are medium green and droop from stalks that can grow to a foot tall. When crushed, pennyroyal's leaves emit a fragrance similar to that of spearmint, but they are not the same plant.

Mentha pulegium, commonly (European) pennyroyal, or pennyrile, also called mosquito plant [1] and pudding grass, [2] is a species of flowering plant in the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. [3] Crushed pennyroyal leaves emit a very strong fragrance similar to spearmint.
Mentha pulegium, a mint relative, is commonly known as European pennyroyal, and is labeled the true pennyroyal cultivar. European pennyroyal, unlike its counterpart, is somewhat invasive, and should be relegated to its desired location by growing it in planters or in garden areas with well-established borders.
