The site is some fifty miles northwest of Charleston, which at the time of the battle was occupied by British troops for well over a year.

Patriot Major General Nathanael Greene lost 692 men which included 251 killed, 367 wounded, and 74 missing (including 17 officers killed and 43 wounded).
