Essays come in many varieties: they can be expository (fleshing out an idea or claim), descriptive, (explaining a person, place, or thing), narrative (relating a personal experience), or persuasive (attempting to win over a reader).

Write a rough first draft without worrying about details like word choice or grammar. Edit your rough draft, and revise and fix the details.
Verbs like analyze, compare, discuss, explain, make an argument, propose a solution, trace, or research can help you understand what you’re being asked to do with an assignment. Unless the instructor has specified otherwise, most of your paper assignments at Harvard will ask you to make an argument.

Finally, I'll break down two of these published college essay examples and explain why and how they work.
