In 1987, Exene married an actor named Viggo Mortensen, with whom she had a son named Henry. Her first solo album of music (she did a spoken-word album in 1985) was released in 1989. Cervenka and Mortensen divorced in 1998.
Cervenka made several film appearances, and she met Danish-American actor Viggo Mortensen (later to star in the Lord of the Rings trilogy) on the set of Salvation! in 1986.
