Fairytale Town opened to the public on August 29, 1959. Located in William Land Park in Sacramento, California, Fairytale Town was dedicated as a gift to the children of the Central Valley by the City of Sacramento, the Junior League of Sacramento and other community and business leaders.
The magical land of Fairytale Town opened in William Land Park! More than 17,000 people visit during opening weekend. Among the original play sets on the grounds: The Crooked Mile, The Cheese Stands Alone, Farmer Brown’s Barn, Owl’s House, Cinderella’s Carriage, King Arthur’s Castle, and the Children’s Theater.

Children leaving a pumpkin ride in Fairytale Town, 1963 William Land was a pioneer who built the Western Hotel at the NE corner of 2nd and K St in 1875 (California Historical Landmark #601). There is an elementary school named after him. He is buried in a Greek temple mausoleum within East Lawn Memorial Park in Sacramento.
