I did a little bit of college for programming. Didn't do well, ended up abandoning classes a lot. Felt like I was wasting money because I didn't have the motivation for school. My mom got me a job at a grade school for IT. Worked there for 2 years and did well for myself. Applied at a less shitty Catholic school and worked another 2 years.

My closest friends are from high-school, work and meeting through others. Never went to college. As lots of comments in this thread show, you make friends via shared enthusiasms, pursued together to make shared experiences. I did make all my friends at University, and we're a strong friendship group 25 years later.
