- Hair Clips. WHO: Paris Hilton, 2005. The hair accessories are popping up everywhere this summer, from Gucci to Claire's. The good news is that you don't have to spend a fortune to nail this noughties trend.
- Tonal Dressing. WHO: Destiny's Child, 2005. One thing we'll always remember this decade for was how committed everyone was to achieving a standout look.
- Cargo Pants. WHO: Britney Spears, 2003. Yes, the "ugly" chic pants are officially a trend of the present-day, and we're not even sorry to say that we're excited to start wearing the practical style.
- Tiny-Strap Sandals. WHO: Kate Moss, 2003. Strappy sandals are having a major revival at the moment, and we're thanking icons like Kate Moss who made the shoes look so good.
- Bandage Dresses. There was one simple rule when it came to cocktail dresses in the early aughts: the tighter, the better. The most in-demand bandage dress brand was Hérve Léger, who became known throughout Hollywood for his uber-sexy silhouettes that were adored by the likes of Kim Kardashian and Kate Winslet (and me in my early teens).
- Bubble Dresses. Seeing celebrities wearing bubble dresses on the red carpet brings back visceral middle school memories. I'm not sure why these dresses with gathered, tucked-under hems ever came into style, but I'm happy that they're gone.
- Printed Skinny Jeans. In the early aughts, your jeans had to be painted-on levels of skinny. But if you really wanted to be cool, they had to be either printed, come in a fun color, or (gasp) both.
- Handkerchief Hemlines. Uneven hemlines had their moment in the early 2000s. The look was totally pirate-inspired but also somehow fashionable?
The fashion of the 2000's is often described as a global mash up, where trends saw the fusion of vintage styles, global and ethnic clothing (e.g. boho), as well as the fashions of numerous music-based subcultures.
- Y2K Sunglasses. At this point, it’s hard to go wrong when it comes to sunglasses. Big frames are back en vogue, as are teeny tiny lenses. Dark, light, colored, bedazzled, heart-shaped, reflective, futuristic, funky—nothing is out of bounds.
- Cargo Pants. If you ask us, it was unjust for cargo pants to ever go out of style. Literally everyone loves pockets, and the more the merrier. While in the early aughts, you might have rocked cargos à la Avril Lavigne with sweatbands and skater shoes, modernized silhouettes such as cropped tops and fitted bodysuits help give the style a contemporary twist.
- Ballet Flats. Growing up, we all had our favorite pair of ballet flats—sparkly, classic, or doll-like (or maybe all of the above). This season, these flats are back to elevate our outfits and perhaps keep us off our toes.
- Baguette Bags. There’s a Goldilocks metric to be used when it comes to purses. Some are way too big, others way too small, both of which we had way too many, stuffed into the nooks and crannies of our closets.
