Camden is situated on the mid-coast of Maine about halfway between Portland and Bar Harbor. The closest international airport is in Bangor (the home of Stephen King) which is about an hour and 20 minutes away. The Portland airport isn’t much further at less than a two-hour drive. There are several regional airports close by as well.
Summer is certainly the most popular time to visit Camden. The weather is nearly perfect and lobster shacks are in full swing. Although this is a fun and gorgeous time to visit, there are a couple of drawbacks to summer. Camden is a popular getaway, and June through August is peak tourist season. It’s no surprise that the heart of this coastal town is Camden Harbor. Benches on the park lawn offer the perfect spot to relax and watch the ships pull in and out of the harbor. A roaring waterfall nearby adds a unique aspect to the otherwise serene landscape. Grab a spot in the park and pause for a moment to take in the view.
Across the street from Harbor Park is another lovely green space. The grounds of the Camden Amphitheater and the adjacent public library are magical. Stone paths surround the brick structures climbing with ivy and lined with perfectly manicured shrubs. It’s a beautiful spot to take a walk, relax, or snap a few photos.
Going for a stroll downtown and popping into a few shops or restaurants is a great way to spend the afternoon. Zoot Coffee is a delicious stop for a warm drink and a light breakfast. When you’re ready for lunch, head to Long Grain for some award-winning Thai food. For classic seafood and lobster, try Peter Ott’s on the Water.
You can’t visit Camden without taking a stroll by the seaside. While you’re on the pier, watch the fishing boats coming in with their haul.
