This name is also interpreted as 'Vehement protector'. Also, 'Afton' is a name of a Scandinavian origin, and, as far as I know, the Swedish word 'afton' means 'nightfall'. So 'William Afton' literally means 'vehement protector of the nightfall' = 'nightguard'. Not a god-themed name, but still quite fitting for him considering his role in the story.
