Dec 23, 2017 · Besides the obvious times when lightning bolt is better (i.e. fire immune/resistant creatures, which there are quite a few of), the real benefit of lightning bolt is that you can fairly easily target at least two enemies in a fray while avoiding your allies.
Lightning bolt is better for tighter quarters combat. Fireball is really an open battlefield spell, where, when in its element, it is KING. But, if ur in dungeon corridors and castle ruins, lightning bolt will fry your enemies but not your friends. And less stuff is resistant to lightning than fire.
Lightning bolt is more effective when spaces are enclosed, like bottlenecks, corridors, and such, but maneuvering them is much tougher. Where fireball fails (because fire resistance), lightning bolt does the job. When lightning damage is resisted, fireball could be used. Again, foresight.

Jul 9, 2022 · Some would argue that Lightning bolt is even better than Fireball. The likelihood of encountering a fire-resistant or fire immune creature is far greater than encountering an electricity resistant or electricity immune creature like a blue dragon or storm giant.

Sep 15, 2021 · The difference between the two is damage type as it pertains to resistances, but lightning bolt also allows a lot more control over where that damage is dealt. That's not just other party members. It's treasure, plot devices like notes, or civilian collateral damage. Not everything is about the players and monsters. ;-)
