The movie is based on author Luanne Rice's 2000 novel of the same name.
Newly married couple Mark McCune (Eric Close) & Dianne Parker (Kimberly Williams) discover that their unborn child will be born with genetic defects.
Not wanting to care for the child, Mark abandons Dianne, leaving her to raise their daughter alone with the help of her mother, Hannah (Blair Brown) & Mark's brother, David (Campbell Scott), who has always loved Dianne. She also finds herself caring for a young girl (Alexa Vega), who lives with her alcoholic mother (Roxanne Hart).
