Aug 1, 2015 · The later model 223 heads (After 1956) are of a higher compression. The head from the 1958 'A' code engine may be the best for performance use its factory rated at 8.6:1 C. R. and appears to be the highest stock CR available. This engine was used in the Courier and the Fairlane's and is rated at 145Hp.

The 250 was a stroked 200, made by increasing the stroke from 3.126 to 3.91 in (79.4 to 99.3 mm). Output was 155 hp (116 kW) in the Mustang, and the 250 became the base engine in 1971.
