Fort Baker is one of the components of California's Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The Fort, which borders the City of Sausalito in Marin County and is connected to San Francisco by the Golden Gate Bridge, served as an Army post until the mid-1990s, when the headquarters of the 91st Division moved to Parks Reserve Forces Training Area.

The post, built between 1902 and 1910, is one of the park’s best examples of the army’s “Endicott Period” military construction, named after the late 19 th century Secretary of War, William C. Endicott.

The Lime Point Military Reservation was set aside by President Millard Fillmore in 1850 as the site for a strong defense fortification across the-strait from Fort Point, which had been recommended by the first board of officers to study defense of San Francisco Bay.
