The Battle of Frankfurt was a three-day battle for control of Frankfurt am Main during World War II. The 5th Infantry Division conducted the main attack while the 6th Armored Division provided support.

The Frankfurt Rhein/Main airport was established in the 1930s as a replacement for the Frankfurt-Rebstock Airport, which became too small. In the Second World War the field was used by the German Luftwaffe. In 1945 it was occupied by US troops, who set up the Rhein/Main Air Base of the US Air Force here.

The Northern Area Command was established in Frankfurt, Germany, on December 1, 1952, pursuant to General Order 27, USAREUR, October 27, 1952. It replaced the Frankfurt Military Post. Its jurisdiction initially included the districts of Frankfurt and Würzburg.
