Haydn brought the sonata form to masterful fruition in more than 100 symphonies, notably the ‘Military’, the ‘Clock’ and the ‘London’ (all 1793–95). His most famous choral works are the oratorios The Creation (1798) and The Seasons (1801).
Documentary information on Haydn’s life and musical activity before his employ by the Esterházy court in 1761 is scanty.
