He was a keen, though not very bigoted, Calvinist; was one of the most active Protestant princes, and was followed, 1583, by his son, Louis IV, who was a Lutheran, and he in turn, 1583-92, by Frederick IV (Frederick the Wise,) who gave every encouragement to the Calvinists.
