    Step One: Brainstorm

Spend some time reflecting on all of the ways you are grateful for your dad. What are some of your favorite traits he carries? What are some things you have learned from him? What are some of your favorite memories? Get clear on all of these things.

    Step Two: Pick a Topic

Now, pick one of the things you brainstormed about to be the topic of your poem. You can do one about the overall effect your father has had on you throughout the years, or you can write about something more specific. It is really up to you! But remember, poems don’t always have to rhyme and there really isn’t a right or wrong way to write one. Especially when you are making it for someone you love.

    Step Three: Write!

Here is the fun part, writing! Take your topic and run with it. Remember that it doesn’t have to be perfect right away. Just get those thoughts onto the page and you can edit and rewrite things later on. The important part is to fully put your feelings out onto the page.
